Arrow Executive Order 13514 and Green Business

executive order 13514The signing of an executive order is a relatively quiet event in the grand scope of things.  Yet, executive orders have the effect of law if left unchallenged.  In this example, the executive order requires all federal agencies to comply with a variety of environmental mandates.  The order calls for decrease in water use, measuring greenhouse gas emission, paper reduction, Green fleet, and lowering energy demand.  There is little new in this order that has not been seen before, but it does send a message to the rest of the world.  The requirement to be a truly Green business will take more than a few token efforts.

One the notable demands of this executive order is the requirement to install a sustainability officer.  the primary duty of the sustainability officer is to create a comprehensive sustainability plan.  All the items mentioned in the order are pieces of the whole project.  The key to the whole concept is the sustainability plan that capsulizes the environmental program of the company.  The plan may vary from company to company, but the key points remain constant.

Let's be honest, a lay person will not be able to develop a proper sustainability plan.  There are hundreds of choice that requires an extensive knowledge of Green and sustainability issues, and the foresight to put it all together in a way that allows for effective implementation.  Regardless of the passion for environmental issues, even a committed employee cannot complete a well-designed sustainability plan.

the handwriting is on the wall.  The president's order has far reaching implications beyond government agencies.  This order is a clear message concerning the future of Green business across America.  Every business will need to develop a sustainability plan to promote environmental compliance.  Knowing that is the the way forward, a business has a couple of choice.  The first choice is to do this poorly, if at all.

The second choice is to install a sustainability officer who is capable doing an assessment of the operation and preparing a well-done sustainability report.  If you want to outsource the task, you will want to locate a Certified Green Consultant to provide the guidance to make this project work right.  Better yet, why not train an eager employee to be a Certified Sustainability Officer
